 Vision On - Mike Hoggett

This photograph is from my recent exhibition at the Eden Project. It was called Vision On and contained over 600 small paintings. There are further images of this show and other works in the gallery pages.

My work comes out of the abstract expressionist tradition. I paint in as pure a way as possible, working with a clear open mind, responding intuitively to the magic of paint. I have a passion for bright colour, layers and depth. The process is like a game of hide and seek, scraping back to reveal layers beneath, or perhaps covering these layers up over and over until I can get the thing to work. The paint is smeared, dragged, flicked, dripped and scratched into, using brushes, knives, kitchen spatulas, window squeegees - and all manner of things that I can find to manipulate the paint on the surface.
